Republicans Are The Party of Compassion

How Welfare Reform Helped Tanya From New Jersey

In 1996, Republicans reformed welfare and lifted millions of Americans out of poverty. Even more compelling than the statistics, however, are the stories of the individual Americans whose lives were turned around by Republican welfare reforms.

Tanya, a 21-year-old mother of one, had been forced out of her home due to domestic violence and began living with her grandmother.

Tanya enrolled in the TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) program, and her case manager accessed Welfare-to-Work funds for her to attend computer programming classes. TANF childcare assistance and Medicaid enabled Tanya to complete her computer training. Through a TANF job search program, Tanya obtained employment as a graphics design technician.

Tanya continues to receive post-TANF childcare assistance and is now a candidate for promotion to a higher paying position. Tanya credits her TANF case manager for helping to get her life back on track.

For 30 years, Democrats fought a losing War on Poverty. Thanks to a Republican Congress, America is finally winning that war.
