Republicans Are The Party of Compassion
How Welfare Reform Helped Kristi From New Mexico In 1996, Republicans reformed welfare and lifted millions of Americans out of poverty. Even more compelling than the statistics, however, are the stories of the individual Americans whose lives were turned around by Republican welfare reforms.
Kristi Wall was a struggling single mother with a high school diploma and two young girls to support.
Upon enrolling in the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program, Kristi was assigned a caseworker, who was very helpful in assessing the skills that Kristi would need to obtain meaningful employment. Her caseworker decided that despite some experience as an administrative assistant, Kristi would require more computer skills to be competitive in the job market. The TANF staff signed Kristi up for a computer class, and helped her create a resume and contact potential employers. The TANF program provided Kristi with the opportunity to refine her job skills and become more marketable to employers.
Kristi now works for Career Works as an administrator for job placement, a program that she once used. Kristi loves her job because she now has the ability to give back and help others in the same program that once helped her.
For 30 years, Democrats fought a losing War on Poverty. Thanks Republican Congress, America is finally winning that war.
