Canceling Coverage Protects Nobody
The Cost of "KennedyCare" (S. 6)
-- Nationwide and Selected States--
Democrats have refused a dozen Republican offers to consider patients' rights legislation. Next week, the Senate will debate the bill Democrats backed for two years: S. 6, the "Patients' Bill of Rights Act" sponsored by Senators Daschle and Kennedy.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates this bill will increase private health insurance premiums 6.1 percent above inflation. Data from the Barents Group, an economic consulting firm, reveal an increase of this magnitude will impose hundreds of dollars in hidden taxes on families, eliminate jobs, and cancel the health coverage of millions.
