What a Difference a Year Makes!

Reformed (?) Gun-Grabber Rosie O'Donnell Hires Armed Bodyguard for Her Son

What a year Rosie O'Donnell has had. Last year, the woman whose fans call her the "Queen of Nice" opined that America's 65 million responsible gun owners should be put in jail. This year, in addition to acting as the celebrity spokeswoman for the so-called "Million Mom March," she's letting her son's bodyguard obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Last year:

"I honestly think -- and I am not an expert on the Amendments. I think the only people in this nation who should be allowed to own guns are police officers. . . . I don't care if you want to hunt, I don't care if you think it's your right. I say, 'Sorry.' It is 1999. . . You are not allowed to own a gun, and if you do own a gun I think you should go to prison" [The Hotline, 4/23/99, emphasis added].

This year:

"An application for a concealed weapon permit by Rosie O'Donnell's bodyguard has worried some Greenwich neighbors of the television personality and gun-control advocate . . .

"O'Donnell expressed concern that publicity about her son's attendance at a local school -- coupled with the information that the guard would be unarmed -- could make him vulnerable to harm" [The Stamford Advocate, 5/25/00, emphasis added].

At least Ms. O'Donnell is on target when she confesses not to be an expert on the Bill of Rights. Sift through the contradictions along her intellectual journey, though, and you'll find this argument for the right to keep and bear arms: Criminals are less likely to attack if they think you might be armed. Assure criminals that their victims will be unarmed (say, by outlawing handguns) and they will have at you and your children. It's an argument for the Second Amendment any mother can understand.
